Australian Quilters Offer Tips for Successful Stitchery

  1. Choose light background fabrics such as white, cream, and beige because they make tracing easier.
  2. Add stabilizer or interfacting to the back of the background fabric to provide a foundation for stitches and to allow thread to be carried across the back of a design without being seen on the front.
  3. Choose a needle that's comfortable for you and that you can thread easily.
  4. Avoid cheap threads.
  5. Use two strands of DMC embroidery floss or DMC perle cotton, size 8, if your stitchery will be part of a quilt.
  6. "Strip" your threads by cutting a length, separating each thread, then putting them together again before threading the needle.
  7. Run threads through Thread Heaven.
  8. Stitch with the grain of the thread so it passes through the fabric with best results.
