QN's StarryNight |

Make this petite version of the quilt featured in “Easy Lesson” in the December/ January 2009 issue of Quilters Newsletter. For many years QN staffers have been designing free patterns for our readers to celebrate spring, QN’s birthday, and Christmas. This year our gift to you is a pattern for a whimsical fusible applique quilt designed by assistant editor Joli Hines Sayasane.
See instructions below as well.

ALSO NEEDED: 1/2 yard fusible web
TECHNIQUES USED: machine piecing, fusible applique, embellishments
ASSEMBLY
1 Wash and press fabrics. Cut the background fabrics and patches listed in the materials and cutting box.
2 Piece the sky patch to the snow patch and press the seam open.
3 Tape the following two pages together, matching the dotted lines, to create a full-size pattern and applique placement diagram.
4 Place the pattern face down on a lightbox or tape it to a welllit window. Trace the hill, stars, trees, and snow family patches onto the paper side of fusible web. Cut out the shapes, leaving an extra 1/4˝ all around.
5 Following the manufacturer’s instructions for the fusible web, iron the shapes to the wrong sides of the applique fabrics. Cut out the applique patches on the drawn lines.
6 First, fuse the hill over the seam between the sky and snow patches. Next, arrange the stars, trees, and snow family on the background, referring to the applique placement diagram. Fuse in place. Finally, fuse the orange noses on the snow family. If you wish, use a blind stitch or decorative machine stitch to secure the edges to the background.
7 Layer the quilt backing, batting, and top. Baste. Quilt in the ditch around the applique, quilt swirls in the sky, and then quilt wavy lines in the snow. Use heat-set crystals or beads to add the eyes, buttons, and necklace to the snow family. Bind the quilt to finish
